Treatment for TMJ involves identifying the most comfortable position for your bite. Once identified, Dr. Bufo can begin adjusting your bite through the use of a bite positioner or ‘orthotic’. This positioner will allow your jaw to rest in a comfortable position and start eliminating your TMJ symptoms. After your orthotic has been adjusted and honed to relieve you all of your symptoms, orthodontics or porcelain bonding can be used to permanently adjust your teeth and bite.

During the treatment process, Dr. Bufo can also help relieve patients of their TMJ symptoms through Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). Using electrodes placed over the painful areas, TENS is able to relieve pain by sending a low-volt electrical current that relaxes the strained, painful muscles. Within 30 minutes of treatment, most patients begin to feel relief.
